Wilmington and Burgaw Area Real Estate News

During times of drought, wildfires become a serious threat to the local area. Right now, Southeastern North Carolina is in the middle of a drought. The Holly Shelter Game Land near Hampstead, NC, in Pender County is known for having bouts of wildfires, so it seems almost expected that one would develop in the dry, hot conditions of this past week.

It isn't clear exactly when the fire developed, but Monday's record highs caused the wildfire to flare up. It was further worsened by windy conditions that are now making the fire difficult to contain. It as announced today that the fire covers 10,000 acres.

No homes have been harmed in the blaze. However, air quality and visability warnings have been issued, and the Onslow County Chapter of the American Red Cross just announced that it is opening a shelter this afternoon. The shelter is located at Southwest Middle School on Furia Drive in Jacksonville.
