If you're from Southeastern North Carolina, you know exactly what the North Carolina Azalea Festival is all about. Since it is officially Azalea Fest weekend, here's a bit of history on the area's premiere yearly event.

For more than 50 years (64 this year!), people have been gathering to celebrate at the North Carolina Azalea Festival. This festival is centered around the beautiful flowering shrubs, Azaleas, that grow in our area and bloom in April every year. But it's more than just an appreciation for beauty. It's a chance to show some community pride.

The Azalea Committee, works very hard every year to bring events to Wilmington that will appeal to all ages. We have big name performers, garden tours, a street fair, parade, a party, art shows, Southern belles, and our very own Queen. It takes over 1,000 volunteers to get the show off the ground and people drive in from hundreds of miles away to take part 125 events. Across 5 days, 300,000 people will visit the Azalea Festival.
