Wilmington and Burgaw Area Real Estate News

Owning a horse is a huge responsibility. Not only do you have to take care of them extensively, you have to have the appropriate piece of land for them to live on. Everything about your land has to come together to make it perfect for your horse. This is everything from the size of the lot, to what type of land it is. Many places around Burgaw are perfect for horses and horse lovers. Here is what you need to look for when looking at equestrian real estate.

Lot Size

The most important thing about your lot is the size. Horses need ample space toBurgaw NC Horses run around and grow. The very minimum size of your lot should be 1.5 acres. If a horse cannot run around then their stress levels will rise and your horse may become restless and disobedient. Make sure that your horse has enough space to burn energy and exercise.

Vegetation

Another important aspect in your land is the ability to grow grass and other types of vegetation. Horses can eat grass and other plants, but it is also an option to go out and buy horse feed. It is up to you what route you want to go down, but a land that is able to grow different plants is a good, easy choice.

Shade

Horses spend a lot of time outside, so it’s important you give them a shady place to rest at least a few hours a day.

Shelter

A barn with stalls that are at least 12’x12’ is usually the most desirable equestrian building. Depending on the type of horses you own or want to own and where you property is located, you may also consider a shed and/or pasture shelter.

Good Fencing

Fencing is a very important part of an equestrian property. Not only does it prevent your horse from getting away, but it also protects your horse from hurting itself. Wood fences are great. Barbed wire fences are hazardous to your horse. If the property you are interested in does not have fencing, it’s important that you are financially and legally able to install proper fencing.

Nearby Riding Areas

It isn’t a necessity, but it is nice to be able to ride your horse from your property rather than a trailer. I suggest looking for property in an equestrian community, or near an equestrian park or some open land (with owners who don’t mind you riding on their property). It will definitely be worth it!

Room for a Companion

A lot of animals need a companion to get along with, and horses are no different. Horses can get very upset if there is not animal company around. Some people may think this means they have to get another horse, but this is not the case at all. Another horse can be a good choice, but a miniature horse, a goat or even a dog can do the trick. This will keep up your horse’s spirits and improve his health.
